Winter Fly Fishing at Kilnsey

Our fly fishery offers excellent fishing throughout the winter as it is fed from spring water that emerges from deep underground. This means that the clear spring water enters the top lake at a constant temperature of 7.5°c regardless of the air temperature.

As the water stays at in ideal temperature for growing trout, they remain very active and feed just as well throughout the winter. This is also helped by the abundant natural food supplies like buzzers and bloodworms.

Fly Fishing

The pictures on this page were taken in December 2010 following a week of temperatures below -10°c, and the top lake is virtually unaffected by ice. In fact since opening in 1978 the top lake has never frozen over. During this extreme cold spell in 2010, as the valley bottoms reached down to -18°c, it actually stayed noticeably warmer up here.
